Tom Doherty – Painting

My watercolour paintings emerge from the beauty of the Muskoka landscape that invites you to linger with memories of days past, or memories created in the present moment.
I live in Muskoka and it is my source of inspiration. It is a place for slowing down and finding balance, of experiencing restoration and wholeness, of pondering, imagining and creating.
The gateways into these reflective moments include Muskoka’s dappled sunlit lanes, frosty snow-covered trees, the crispness of the autumn air and fragrant scent of the forest. I am inspired by the rugged rocks, the ripples of the rapids, the silence of a lake and the sparkle on the water. This natural world brings one into a tranquil space.
Watercolour painting is one of my ways to explore and connect to the earth on which I walk. I love the way the paint’s transparent colours mingle on paper, sometimes blurred and sometimes bold. I enjoy the contrasts of light and dark. I am drawn towards watercolour’s mix of nostalgic impressionism.
I paint in the hope that my artwork captures something of your Muskoka experience, providing a way into this part of our world that has influenced you.
