Dan Charbonneau – Wood Carving / Birch Bark

Dan Charbonneau, based in Dwight, Ontario, brings over 30 years of experience in the art of carving and craftsmanship, with a deep-rooted passion for history and nature. His work, showcased in a museum and at events like Algonquin Park’s Logging Museum Day, spans a diverse range of mediums, including woodworking, historic model making, and the creation of model birchbark canoes and items crafted from locally sourced materials. Dan’s art is inspired by the time-honored traditions of crafting and a deep respect for the natural world.
Starting with intricate duck decoys, Dan’s carvings evolved into character pieces, which led to his specialization in recreating historically accurate models of steamships and logging displays. He has also shared his expertise by teaching a canoe building course at a high school, passing on the skills of this age-old craft to the next generation. Through every carving, model, and canoe, Dan captures the essence of history and craftsmanship, offering viewers a tangible connection to the past and the enduring beauty of nature.
